New to Yoga?
What to Expect
Yoga for Every Body
I have started doing yoga several times in my life. And several times I have been discouraged by feeling out-of-place, outsider-ish, and just plain "wrong." It doesn't have to be like that.
Yoga is truly for every type of body, with any amount of flexibility, fitness level, or experience. How is that, you say? Because the core of yoga is breathing. So if you are breathing, you can do yoga. And also (more to the point), the physical poses are there to serve your breathing, focus, and movement, not the other way around.
This is why I teach basic yoga with clear instructions throughout. For even more detailed instructions and the philosophy behind yoga, join my new-to-yoga workshops.
Timing & sign-up
You choose your time zone when you sign up, which should help you decide if it works for you. If you are in doubt, don’t hesitate to ask!
You can book the class up until the last minute before the class starts.
Once the class has started, you can no longer book it, but you can join any time. Don’t worry about being late, your arrival won’t be a disturbance. That said, I plan all classes to be a holistic experience, so I encourage you to set the full time off.
I start and end the classes on time. I am usually online 5-10 minutes before the class if you want to drop in to say hello, which I would love. Likewise, you can keep your video on or off – usually we all turn the video on at the end to connect with our fellow practitioners.
Class content
Classes will focus loosely on a specific theme each month. Over the month, you will gain more familiarity with that theme, digging into what it means for your body and practice. This could be a body part (e.g. hips or shoulders) or it could be something more general like balance or agility. If you want to know in advance what the focus will be, join my newsletter!
I teach with home-practice in mind. This means I assume you have a mat, but no other special equipment. Sometimes we will use a belt or wall or pillow – nothing that you wouldn’t have at hand. There will always be an option to practice completely prop-free.
I don’t play music during live stream classes, because the sound often doesn’t sync up for folks in places with bad bandwidth. But feel free to play your own music or use one of my playlists.
“It is a delight to practice yoga with Marianne. She is always well-prepared and clearly gives a lot of thought to how to organize the class, varying areas of focus and poses, and presenting variations to match our different abilities.”
Becca, Bogota
Payment Options
Just as I believe yoga is for every body, I believe yoga should be accessible to everybody. This is why I apply a sliding scale price to my livestream classes ($5-15 for drop-in classes, $7-20 for workshops). There will always be a coupon option for you not to pay at all. Email me for that coupon if you need it – you don’t have to give a reason at all.
At the same time, I know that teaching yoga isn't free. It is a skill. It takes time. There are costs associated. Personally, I am privileged to be able to pay for yoga classes and so I usually do. Except when I don't. Because that happens too.
All this to say: you do you. And I’ll be happy to see you. Every single time.
