All change!

Sunday morning calm in my neighborhood is not always quiet. I live by a thoroughfare and this morning, everyone seems to be moving. It’s the first of the month after all. All change.

But in between the moving trucks, the loudest sound is birdsong and the far-away humming of bikes in the park across the street. This past week, suddenly, the trees have sprouted full-grown leaves and I can barely see the sun dancing on the artificial lake. It’s just there, in the background, like a tasteful sequin-appliqué, not too little, not too much.

And I am thinking about growth: what we notice and what we don’t.

I know for a fact the trees were almost naked a week ago, tiny little buds giving them that eery yellow-green glow, as if they had a spring-time aura but no real growth. And now they look like summer.

I think people are like that too as we change and grow. At first the change is barely perceptible, like a promise or a memory of something not quite concrete enough to see. And then suddenly, it all materializes, and it is hard to remember what was before.

But the reality is, we all change. All the time. Not just on the first of the month or as the seasons swap out in their familiar circular pattern. All change.

Happy International Worker’s Day!

This will be my last daily musing for a bit as I am taking a weeklong connectivity-break. Next class: virtual vinyasa Wednesday May 11!
